Bouillon is dominated by the medieval fortress of Godfried of Bouillon. From 1089 to his death in 1100, Godfried of Bouillon was Duke of Lower Lorraine and one of the leaders of the First Crusade. He was also named the first king of the kingdom of Jerusalem, but he refused that title. He is also known as "Baron of the Holy Sepulcher" and "King of the Crusaders".

The city is now a tourist center, in the summer there is a lot of camping tourism along the river Semois, which winds around the old city center.
