Audrey Hepburn was born in Belgium

Audrey Hepburn was born on May 4, 1929 in the Keienveldstraat number 48 in Elsense, Brussels as Audrey Kathleen van Heemstra Hepburn-Ruston. Because of her father she was born as a British citizen.

She was the daughter of the British banker Joseph Anthony Hepburn-Ruston and the Dutch aristocrat Baroness Ella van Heemstra. Ella van Heemstra was the daughter of politician Aarnoud van Heemstra. Hepburn had two half-brothers from the first marriage of her mother with a Dutch aristocrat, Alexander and Ian Quarles van Ufford.

Audrey Hepburn grew up in the Keienveldstraat in Elsense, Brussels. When she was almost two, the family moved briefly to the Elsensesteenweg 311 and the Bronstraat 99 in Saint-Gilles. As of January 1932 they lived in a villa in a sunken road in rural Linkebeek (now Beukenstraat 129). During this Brussels childhood she sometimes went with her mother to ballets and concerts.

After her parents' divorce in 1935 she moved with her mother to Arnhem in the netherlands.
